Stella welcomes her with an open heart. She tells Mitch about her past life, how once she was married to a young boy whom she later discovered with an older man.

From the start, Blanche and Stanley are wary of each other. In an emotional monologue, she urges her sister to leave Stanley. As Stanley is about to leave, Stella has her first labor pains and has to be taken to the hospital.

Finally, the doctor approaches Blanche in a gentle manner and convinces her to leave with him. A short while later, Stanley is remorseful and cries up to Stella to forgive him.

Three weeks later, Stella is packing Blanche's clothes and waiting for a doctor and an attendant to come and take her to the state mental institution. Mitch, present at the poker game, breaks down in tears. The birthday dinner comes and goes, but Mitch never arrives.

Mitch tells Blanche that they both need each other. Stanley later questions Blanche about her earlier marriage. Afterwards, he informs Blanche that Stella is going to have a baby.

Even the army had referred to Blanche as being out-of-bounds. When Stanley recovers, he calls for Stella to come down and she does. Blanche has hope in Mitch, and tells Stella that she wants to go away with him and not be anyone's problem.

She is shocked by the disreputable looks of the place. Soon after her arrival, Stanley has a poker night with his friends where Blanche meets Mitch. Later that night, her young husband killed himself as a result of a harsh remark that Blanche made to him.
